EDITOR’S NOTE: This is an excerpt from a speech given by Hollis Brookline High School senior Ryan Pauer to high school juniors and their parents at the annual Destination College event sponsored by the New Hampshire Higher Education Assistance Foundation at Southern New Hampshire University on March 24. Just a year ago, I was attending Destination College and considering my future. Today, I’d like to share some of my experiences with you and six tips that you might find helpful. I began my college planning with great resources from the NHHEAF, which offers several free online tools to help get you started. I’d recommend “Bridges” and the “Kuder Career Planner.” If you’re honest and realistic in answering the questions, these resources will assist you in identifying potential majors, careers and colleges. As you consider schools, realize that you might change your major after you start college, or even change your mind during the college search.
