MANCHESTER – Members of the New Hampshire Credit Union League throughout New Hampshire were treated to sweets and expressions of gratitude from Wish Children and volunteers from Make-A-Wish of New Hampshire from Feb. 12-14. Twenty-five Wish Children and their families visited 18 credit unions to deliver the sweets and to offer personal thanks and share highlights of their wishes, made possible in part by the NHCUL. In Merrimack and Nashua, six Wish Children visited Anheuser-Busch Employee’s Credit Union, St. Joseph Hospital Employees Credit Union and Triangle Credit Union on Feb. 12. Four-year-old Wish Child Rylee visited the staff of Triangle Credit Union – wearing her formal princess gown – and shared memories of her family trip to Disney World.

Celebrate the Girl Scout Cookie program – the biggest girl-led business in the world – with a signature ice cream sundae at the Common Man restaurant. The seven Common Man restaurants in New Hampshire have teamed up with America’s favorite cookie – Girl Scout Thin Mints – to create an ice cream sundae that will benefit programs supporting girls and young women in two states. The Thin Mints Avalanche Sundae features velvety smooth, Common Man-made mint-flavored chocolate ice cream with marshmallow swirls and crushed Thin Mints, topped with hot fudge, whipped cream and a Thin Mints cookie. The sundae will be available at all seven Common Man-named restaurants in New Hampshire for $6 through Sunday, March 24. The Common Man will donate $1 of every sundae sold at its Merrimack, Windham, Ashland, Claremont, Concord, Lincoln and Portsmouth homes to Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains. This is the sixth year The Common Man has helped support Girl Scouting by creating a unique ice cream dessert with popular Girl Scout cookies. The Girl Scout Cookie program is a $790 million business run by girls. Five of the top 10 cookies sold in the U.S. are Girl Scout Cookies.

Ice harvesting was hot business before refrigerator

Harvesting ice, the cutting of natural ice into blocks and storing them in icehouses for summer use, has been called the first agricultural project of the year. Ice was typically cut during January and February, when both the temperature and the ice were right. Members of the Wilton Historical Society recently presented a program on the ice business using the history of the business in Wilton, memories of several residents and background information from the Internet (search for “ice harvesting”). Wilton had several commercial producers. The largest company was owned by Fred Paro, who cut his ice on the mill pond by what is now Label Art. The second largest was Conrad’s, located along Stoney Brook toward Lyndeborough. Fresh Pond Ice Co. on Lake Potanipo in Brookline had a dozen buildings and produced up to 110,000 tons of ice in a good season.

Campbell National Honor Society active in community

The National Honor Society stands in high regard at Campbell High School, being well-respected and well-run. Juniors and seniors must apply to join the society by filling out paperwork at the beginning of the year, answering questions about what they have given to their community, how well they’ve done academically and how they’ve shown that they’re quality role models in the Litchfield community. The officers are nominated and then voted on in the previous year, making sure the group will adopt and continue the group’s customs the next year. Senior Andrea Demos, who was voted Most School Spirit in the yearbook this year, was chosen as president of the National Honor Society. “This year, we were lucky to have two brand-new advisers, Mrs. Denise Freeman and Mrs. Daizha Gatherum, who have been very enthusiastic and energetic,” Demos said when asked how she juggles all of her planning responsibilities. So far this year, the NHS has been fully involved within the community, participating in multiple charities and fundraisers. Once students are invited into the group, each  must serve a certain number of hours toward community service. Juniors must complete a 25-hour individual service project and seniors must do a 15-hour project. Many students choose to give back to the school community with tutoring or continue service projects with which they’ve already been involved, such as work at nursing homes, animal shelters and after-school programs for younger children. For example, senior NHS member Joshua Flynn has tutored underclassmen in math and English, while junior Brianna Hardy has given back to the community by helping out local volleyball camps, teaching kids the fundamentals of the sport. As a group, the National Honor Society has participated in “Service Socials.” Every month, the students go into the community and practice their service. They started in October with the Laugh Everyday 5K in honor of Alison Corf, a beloved Campbell student who has since died.

Souhegan students excel in Poetry Out Loud

Souhegan High School has held a Poetry Out Loud competition for the last three years, and most English teachers decide to have their students participate. To begin, each student chooses a poem and memorizes it. Then the students perform their poems in front of their English class. The best performers move on to grade finals and the best from each grade advance to the school finals. “Each year, Souhegan has had between 600 and 900 students compete, with nearly all classes participating,” said Jeanne Sturges, the co-coordinator of the competition. “I think Poetry Out Loud is a great opportunity for kids who don’t perform to put themselves out there,” said junior Aislinn Evans, a school finalist. Evans added, “It’s challenging, but it’s good to be put outside your comfort zone occasionally.” Poetry Out Loud emphasizes a lot of key skills. “I think Poetry Out Loud is an excellent program that promotes poetry to high school students,” said Tracey Hoagland, the other co-coordinator. “I also think there are a lot of transferable skills students can get from participating in Poetry Out Loud.

Alvirne spreads the word about offensive language

“Spread the word to end the word” was on people’s minds on Wednesday. It’s a promotional phrase to stop the frequent use of the R-word by teens and adults and to show that sometimes words can hurt more than any action. The feelings associated with the R-word can lead to some feeling bullied and others offended. This event has become a tradition at Alvirne High School, and many groups at the school felt the need to speak their minds about it. Studio 19, Alvirne’s televised announcements, ran a special broadcast for the day with insight from Principal Steven Beals, as well as an “outro” recycled from last year’s “Spread the word to end the word” day. The WATS club, an acronym for “We Are All The Same,” made a large banner that pledged for the stopping of the use of the R-word and other offensive language. Students and faculty alike were invited to sign it and in return received either a bracelet or a ribbon as thanks. Senior WATS club member Elizabeth Treusdell said the campaign “won’t make students stop saying hurtful things, but it will certainly force them to see that such words are just not OK.” The topic was the underlying tone of the day because everyone seemed to be bringing it up.

Sophomore’s Dylan rendition wins Milford High Talent Show

Feb. 20 was an exhilarating night for sophomore Riley Mason. When Milford High school hosted the annual Talent Show put together by the National Honor Society, the students and parents were blown away by Mason’s outstanding stage presence and raw talent. A variety of brilliant and skillful acts made the judges rather ambivalent when deciding on the winners. The judges were Jennifer Erdody, music teacher; Eric Thibault, math teacher; Anna Parker, social studies teacher; and two students, junior Jack Nichols and senior Nick Simo. Although the decision was close, Mason touched the hearts of the judges with her pure voice and natural musical finesse when she performed her rendition of “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” by Bob Dylan. “I was brought up listening to old classics like The Beatles, Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, so picking this song was really easy,” Mason said.

Hollis Brookline holds its most spirited week of the year

The last week in February at Hollis Brookline High School is an exciting one: Spirit Week. It’s the week before midwinter break, and it emphasizes both class spirit and united school spirit in different ways. It starts on Monday with the announcement of which class won the Penny Wars the week before. The sophomores won the week, and overall, HBHS raised more than $2,200 for the Red Cross Club’s Relief Fund through the Penny Wars. The boys basketball team also raised $2,500 for the American Cancer Society’s Coaches vs. Cancer program during the week. By the end of Monday, HBHS had caught the spirit bug, and as sophomore Concy Moore put it, “The excitement lasts the whole week.” Students and teachers participate in dress-up days during the week. This year, the freshman class named Monday as Pajama Day, the sophomores chose Tuesday to be Ugly Sweater Day, the juniors chose Wednesday to be Sports Day, the seniors named Thursday as Formal Day, and Friday was Blue and White Day. “I like using the week as an excuse to dress ridiculously without worrying about what people think,” junior Matt Michaels said. The average percentage of participation in dress-up days this year was 70 percent. For many kids during the week, the day doesn’t end at 2:24 p.m.
