Nashua South students have a ball with community service

When the idea of community service is mentioned, laborious images of volunteering at soup kitchens or stabbing litter off the side of the highway with a  42-inch pick come to mind. Rarely is the concept of enjoying friends at a semiformal dance considered community service. Students across New Hampshire who are yearning to make a difference in their community are eagerly looking forward to the National Honor Society Charity Ball. The annual Charity Ball is a semiformal dance endorsed and held by the National Honor Society. In order to be a part of NHS, students must be exemplary models based on the criteria of the four pillars: scholarship, leadership, service and character. While the New Hampshire chapter of NHS put the event together, the ball isn’t limited to honor society students. “I can’t wait to attend the Charity Ball.

Finding romance at Alvirne High School

For all of you lonely, love-forsaken sad sacks at Alvirne High School, your chance to find true love was Wednesday night. That was when the notorious Dating Game was held. The Dating Game consists of several romance-related events. First was the cliche-type dating game, in which a lucky contestant asked a series of questions of a few bachelors to decide which one was the most datable. Next, there was the couple’s game, in which select couples were quizzed about their partners. Prizes for the games came from the local community: movie tickets or gift cards to restaurants to take that special someone on a date. “It’s a fun way to  inspire romance and friendliness in the students, even if only for a night,” senior Ryann McQuaid said. The Dating Game was open to all students and even teachers. The event ran under the coordination of the Prom Committee as one the major fundraisers to lower the cost of prom tickets, which usually run around $60.

Nashua North librarian overseeing Race to Read program

Heidi Grant, the Nashua High School North librarian and district head librarian, was chosen by Superintendent Mark Conrad to head a committee to oversee the Race to Read program that will provide current fifth-grade students with a book to read over the summer. On July 15, 2012, Nashua and 12 other cities in the state participated in the New Hampshire Motor Speedway Race to Benefit Education. The Nashua School District was awarded $20,000 after Robert Hallowell, the president of the Board of Education, correctly predicted that Kasey Kahne would be the winner of the Lenox Industrial Tools 301 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race held at the speedway in Loudon. The money will go toward providing a book for every student entering sixth grade this summer. The books will be chosen from a list of 10 that Grant, as well as English teachers, librarians and staff of the Nashua Public Library, select based on their knowledge of popular books and what students would be interested in. The list of 10 books was given to fifth-grade students to vote on.

Souhegan High’s Sophomore Career Day proves beneficial

A crucial part of Souhegan High School’s philosophy is encouraging students to engage in the world around them, in academic endeavors and beyond. Sophomore Career Day, which was held recently, represents an excellent opportunity for students to embrace this idea, through the possible discovery of a career that inspires them or forging a lasting relationship with a community member. The inspiration for this event stemmed from Souhegan’s relationship with New Hampshire Scholars, an initiative that encourages students to take challenging and engaging course loads while also encouraging schools to improve career readiness for their student population. New Hampshire Scholars asks that all schools involved in the initiative form a Business Advisory Board as part of their effort to bring more career education and opportunity into school curriculums. Souhegan’s board includes faculty, business professionals from the community and, most recently, students from the school’s Future Business Leaders of America organization. Maggie Paul, Souhegan’s community service coordinator and a member of the board, said the group came up with the idea to host a Sophomore Career Day while brainstorming ways for the school community to connect with the local business community. The advisory board helped contact 42 business professionals – 14 of whom were Souhegan alumni – who came in to speak to the sophomores about their respective career fields. They were assigned to groups of four or five panelists who talked to the students about what attracted them to their field, how they had arrived at their current position, what a typical day might look like for them and how technology contributes to their field. The panels covered a variety of professions, including business, education, engineering, health care, public safety and communications, and were formed based on the interests expressed in a career survey that the grade had taken earlier in the year. The students also received the chance to ask the professionals questions about any aspect of their careers; many panel members expressed genuine surprise at the sheer number of questions that the students had and at the curiosity and interest that they revealed. The impact of the event upon of its participants was significant – both Paul and a fellow faculty member and advisory board member, Tim Cotreau, said the response from both the professionals and the students was outstanding. “The professionals loved it – they wanted to stay longer,” Paul said. “And we also received excellent feedback from the students.” She noted that all of the professionals credited “the ability to think critically and to write well as key skills in their careers.” Given that those two skills are fundamental components of Souhegan’s curriculum, this common thread acted as another way for the students to connect to these professionals and also contributed to the students’ understanding of their application in the real world. Also, this kind of event helps develop students’ networking skills, a necessity for any postgraduate plans. “They learn how to communicate with these professionals, which can lead to possible contacts for a summer job or internship, senior project experts or just the chance to get to know people,” Paul said. The Business Advisory Board plans to expand the event to accommodate this year’s feedback – they hope to allow the students to attend two 30-minute panels so they can explore more than one career interest. The board emphasized, though, that the implementation of career discovery opportunities aren’t limited to this particular event.

From Feb. 4-8 all over the state, the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association encourages high schools to get involved in Sportsmanship Week. During Sportsmanship Week, the NHIAA encourage all student-athletes, spectators and coaches to really take into consideration what sportsmanship means and how it affects the game. Since Campbell High School learned of it last year, it has been one of the most active schools to recognize it. This year, Campbell wanted to go big, so right away it enlisted the help of the Campbell Athletic Leaders, or CAL. This group is composed of athletes, both male and female, who represent all of the core values of Campbell, as well as holding a solid standing in their academics. With the help of CAL, Campbell started its planning.

MILFORD – Sanford Temperature Control announced that Milford’s Special Education Extended School Year Program is the first recipient of its Community Commitment Program. The program will receive a donation of $500. The money will benefit the Summer Challenge program. During January, customers and community members were invited to visit the Sanford website to nominate and then vote for one of the nominees. “We wanted to continue this program for the summer of 2013,” said Johanna Johnson, director of Special Services of Milford, “but we are not able to use budgeted funds for this type of activity. Consequently, we began our search for a donation. Sanford’s Community Commitment provided us with (the money to buy) this year’s prize. “We are very grateful to Sanford for this opportunity.” The program initiated a summer challenge last year to Milford resident families with a child enrolled in ESY.
