The main issue with which schools around America seem to be concerned lately is bullying. As recent news stories have shown, bullying runs deep in our culture and the consequences are dire, sometimes fatal. Alvirne High School is always trying to take steps to prevent bullying. From putting up motivational posters in the hallways to starting the Ambassadors of Hope club to having assemblies dictating the importance of Internet awareness and of treating others with kindness, Alvirne is tirelessly making high school an easier place to be every day. It seems students are starting to get more excited about the cause as they come up with creative ways to help everyone hear the message. The latest idea, Project Firework, was put into action on June 1. The project is a movement in which every kid in the school comes together and lip-syncs the hit pop song “Firework” by Katy Perry. The bouncy, fun song encourages kids to let their inner selves reign. “Come on let your colors burst” is repeated in the chorus so as to enforce the message that everyone is different and that nobody should be afraid of those differences. The song is an extended metaphor, comparing every individual to a firework, because as every firework bursts in a different way, so does every imagination.
