I had the privilege of playing on the varsity volleyball team at Hollis/Brookline High School this year.
Although this is only the second year the team has been in Division I, its players have always been driven and dedicated; the coaching staff has always been impeccable; the schoolâs record has been a reflection of how great the program is.
But this year, there was something new, something different. The team wasnât shy of talented players, and had well-known coach Becky Balfour leading the way, as she had done for so many years at HB.
âEvery season is special in its own way, and this season is no different,â Balfour said.
You always hear of sports teams trying to be like families and trying to connect with one another; this yearâs volleyball team was the definition of that. Even with such a wide range of ages throughout the team, the players were able to create a bond that brought them so close together.
This team wasnât only a team in the gym, but out of it, as well. There was no separation, no cliques and no specific friends secluding themselves from the rest of the team.
âMy favorite thing about this team is that it is so different than any team I have ever been on,â senior captain Sarah Fox said.
