Every year, the sophomore class at Souhegan High School gets to experience the week known as Wintercession. The experiential learning program allows kids to follow their passions and interests. “Students participated in 17 different courses, and traveled to 13 different states and Canada,” said Andy Emerson, Wintercession’s organizer. The courses offered are extremely varied, from desert rock-climbing to Culinary Boot Camp to making a movie. The process of choosing courses begins soon after school is back in session in the fall. Students select their top five courses and are then placed in a lottery to determine which course they’ll attend. Wintercession was held March 12-16, although some classes left on March 11 and some returned the following Saturday, March 17. “The feedback from students continues to be collected,” Emerson said. “However, with all but three courses accounted for, surveys indicate that the satisfaction rate reported by the students is around 90 percent.” Several sophomores described their experiences during Wintercession. “I was on the course Diversity Through the Arts,” Michaela Milne said.
