An audience of adults and students watched performers from different friend groups, personalities and talents on one stage as they lit up the Milford High School cafeteria on March 16 for the annual talent show sponsored by the National Honor Society.
Support was enthusiastic for pop, rock and rap, as well as interpretive dance.
Bree Thomas, Al Francis, Ashley Wells, Katie Dibona, Justin Cohn, Michele Wheeler, Darrick Jones, Levi Maxwell, Emma Griggs, Helaine Hall and Dillon Harwood participated in a wide variety of acts as they sang and danced.
When one of the performers didnât show up, Thomas, Francis and Dibona joined Ricky Bachman to perform on the spot. The unrehearsed song filled space and delighted the audience.
âIt was more carefree and relaxed,â Thomas said. âI performed impromptu with a few others and no one knew the difference.â
Breaking free of the schoolâs music program limitations, people such as Maxwell wrote and performed their own songs with great success.
Not having to follow a code or the instructions of a teacher, students were able to be expressive and put their talents out there. There was interpretive dance, ukulele playing and lots of singing, but each performance was individual.
When each person walked up and performed, some were more nervous than others, but the crowd was supportive and cheered and clapped to make them feel comfortable.
The judges â seniors Cara Brewer and Trevor Frost, and teachers Anna Parker and David Alcox â made it an episode of âAmerican Idolâ at Milford High.
For example, Alcox dressed up and poked harmless fun at every act.
Griggs won, and also was named the Peopleâs Choice, for her version of the Whitney Houston song âI Will Always Love You.â
Second place went to Harwood, who sang and danced to a Britney Spears hit.
Jones was third for his original dance and rap.
With some laughs, tears of joy and cheering, it was a great night full of entertainment.
Mackenzie Garafano is a junior at Milford High School.
