Once again, the competition is on between the sports teams of Nashua High School South and North as the winter seasonâs Battle of the Bridge heats up.
Each season, North and South engage in a âbattleâ to determine which of the schools can best the other in a variety of sporting events. For each game or event held between North and South, a point is awarded to the winning team.
The school with the most points at the end of the season wins, in addition to bragging rights, a silver cup donated in 2008 by Scontsas Fine Jewelry and Home Decor.
Right now, the cup resides at North, as it overtook South by just two points last fall.
So far this winter, the boys and girls indoor track teams and the swimming teams have competed.
In track, the South boys lost to North 58-50, while the girls won 38-22. In swimming, both South teams lost to North by just a single relay race.
In addition to providing a bit of incentive to keep the teams motivated, the battle fuels the fire of the friendly competition between North and South.
âIt builds a good rivalry,â South boys track captain Keith Guay said. âBasically, the athletes treat the games as playoff games, and itâs really serious but fun at the same time.â
Two of the most heavily anticipated games, boys and girls basketball, will take place Friday.
