Bonjour, mesdames et messieurs! This year, the French Club at Milford High School is eager and ready to go, reviving itself with new and exciting events. Club President Matthew Leach, a junior and an experienced leader from the Student Council and Future Business Leaders of America, describes it as “a small club for people like me who are fascinated by the French culture, and it is a way to meet new people. We want the emphasis on fun, not on the stress of needing to raise money.” Leach’s views were echoed by fellow club members, such as sophomore Abigail Blanchet, who said she likes “the fun meetings and meeting new people,” and sophomore Sam Lees, who said it is “learning about the French culture in a hands-on way.” “We do try to do something fun at every meeting,” adviser Kim Snow said, “whether it’s baking cookies or watching a movie.” Recently, the French Club kicked off its first activity with a movie at Leach’s house. They watched and enjoyed “Chocolat,” a 2000 romance film based on the novel by Joanne Harris. In the story, a young mother arrives at the fictional village of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes in France with her 6-year-old daughter and opens La Chocolateria Maya, a chocolate shop. Her chocolate then begins to change the lives of the townspeople in good ways. One of the club’s upcoming events is its December bake sale, at which it will raise scholarship money for seniors. Also, the club will be making and selling crepes with Nutella.
