Most of us know Joe English as the name of a distinctively shaped hill in New Boston or the name of a popular recreation area in Amherst with 10 miles of recreational trails.
The area was in the news recently because Joe English Pond is on the Air Force Satellite Tracking Station in New Boston. Residents would like at least some of the 3,000 acres owned by the government opened for recreation, but the Air Force said there are still too many unexploded bombs lying around.
The area was used by the Air Force as a practice bombing range from 1942-56, during World War II and the Korean War. I can remember hearing the bombs exploding from where I lived at Johnsonâs Corner in Lyndeborough.
Construction of the present tracking station began in 1959.
