In the last year, Souhegan High School has been graced with new appliances that make the school even more unique than before. Among them is an environmentally friendly water fountain that doubles as a water bottle filler. Two fillers have been installed at Souhegan – one at the end of the 2011-12 year and the second over the summer. “The idea for the water bottle filler came from a brainstorming session at an Environmental Club meeting two years ago,” said learning specialist Jane Flythe, the Environmental Club adviser. “One of our seniors thought the amount of plastic water bottle trash that we were generating on a daily basis was a huge problem here. Andy White, who is now a junior, was an important part of this project.” Souhegan is conscious of its faults and finds ways to fix them, as is demonstrated by the Environmental Club. “We went ahead and proposed the idea to senior leadership and Community Council,” Flythe said. “At the heart of the proposal was honoring the mission statement of the school, stewardship, what with plastic water bottles having a high carbon footprint. “The models we researched were around $1,800.
