As the summer waned, much of Merrimack High Schoolâs student population was getting a golden glow at the beach.
The girls soccer team was no different in its quest to savor the last tanning opportunities of the summer. However, it wasnât from stretching out on a fluffy towel, on warm sand, with the ocean and happily screeching seagulls in the background. The team was in preseason mode, working on the notorious âsoccer tan.â
Their towels had been in a soccer bag for a week, their sand was in front of the goalkeeperâs net and the only screaming was from the coaches on the sidelines directing plays.
The girls rose early, hit the field by 8 a.m. every weekday and practiced for two hours.
âThe teamâs success this fall will be determined by how many players are willing to play together,â coach Eleni Flores said.
They were a building team, considering that they had only four seniors after 13 players graduated last year.
