Hollis Brookline High School’s student newspaper, The Cav Chron, is starting a new column called Writer’s Corner. Each issue will feature one author. The paper will publish a sample of the student’s writing and will do a short interview about it. All genres will be recognized, whether it’s fiction, nonfiction, short story or poetry. “When I got (to Hollis Brookline) 11 years ago, the only venue for writers was the basic writing class and the poetry class,” English teacher Lin Illingworth said. “Something had to be done to have more outlets for the talent in this school.” Illingworth advises Hollis-Brookline Publications, which includes The Cav Chron; Excalibur, the yearbook; and Genres, the school’s literary magazine. With so many gifted young writers in the community, it’s good to have many publications for students to choose from to display their writing abilities. School newspapers and literary magazines aren’t the only ways to get involved as a writer this fall.
