The school store at Campbell High School has been empty for years – it has been just a room for storage. But this year, business teacher Laurie Gatherum had a new plan to approach the abandoned area. A new course introduced this year is School Based Enterprise, which is defined in the Campbell course description book as a class that “will take on full responsibility for running the CHS school store. A small group of students (about 9-10) will be required to submit a formal application in order to enroll in the course. The class will meet C block on Day 1 and will open the school store for all three lunches. Students will be divided into small groups to either run the store, complete administrative tasks, or research new products and marketing techniques.” The School Board loved the idea and agreed to the new curriculum because it involved teaching students about marketing, business and accounting. But a problem arose, as the course description says the class should have “about 9-10” students, and the class instead has 19 kids.
