Alvirne seeking hosts for French exchange students

Alvirne High School is preparing to welcome French exchange students in a program has been an Alvirne tradition for a long time. The program gives students the opportunity to travel to France and to host students from Alvirne’s sister school, Lycee Les Pierres Vives, which is just outside Paris. In recent years, complications have affected the trip. In 2010, the swine flu epidemic prevented either group from traveling for fear of spreading the disease, and the year after, terrorist threats against France stopped the Alvirne students from going. Both sides participated last year, but this year there weren’t enough students who were interested in going to France, so it’s just the French students who will be traveling this year. The exchange program provides students with an amazing opportunity to learn more about the language and culture of another country outside the classroom. “This program is incredible,” said senior Josh Carter, who went as a junior. “My time in France was awesome, and I got to experience a different way of life firsthand. I would definitely recommend participating to others.” While there is already a strong cultural aspect to the Alvirne curriculum in the foreign language classes, this provides students with a new perspective on the differences between life in America and France. Even without the cost of going to another country, students can benefit from the program by interacting with a native speaker of the language and participating in trips with the exchange students to places such as Boston and New York and Boston. The French students have already purchased their plane tickets, so they will be arriving in late April. Alvirne teachers are seeking accommodations for the French students who are still without host families. The opportunity to host the French students has recently been opened up to all students, regardless of whether someone takes French, in the hopes that it will increase the number of people willing to host. Any Alvirne students who are interested in hosting a French student may contact foreign language teachers Svetlana Stewart or Gilbert LaChance. Gretchen Gamrat is a senior at Alvirne High School in Hudson.

BG helps state Mock Trial program rebound

It won’t be a surprise to any member of the 17 teams that competed at the Mock Trial State Tournament this weekend if you have never heard of the program. In fact, only 17 high schools in the state, including Bishop Guertin High School, participated in the event at Hillsborough County Superior Court South in Nashua. Bishop Guertin coach Brian Jackson, a religion teacher at the school, played a crucial role in revitalizing the “intellectual contact sport” in the last few years. Although the tournament and results will be concluded once you read this, earlier this week, the BG Mock Trial team was preparing for its largest competition of the year – a tournament that might never have happened had it not been for the work of its coach. In 2007, when the New Hampshire State Bar Association stopped sponsoring Mock Trial in the state, which had nearly 25 active teams, Jackson didn’t want to disappoint his enthusiastic team. He got in contact with the Mock Trial team at Yale University, which sponsored competitions for high school students, and began to compete there. In 2009, Yale began to sponsor the state tournament again, and in 2011, Bishop Guertin began its own invitational tournament. Kyle Skinner, a Yale student who has since graduated, took over as the state coordinator, and now Mock Trial is back on the rise. Jackson said he’s thrilled with the new Mock Trial state tournament. He has worked hard with all three of his teams to prepare for the states, competing with schools such as the Academy for Science and Design in Nashua, Souhegan High School and Phillips Exeter Academy, the winner of the 2012 state championship and the BG Invitational in December.

Flower sale raises money for scholarship at Campbell High School

Feb. 14 marks the famous Valentine’s Day. Some say it’s a holiday made up by card companies, while others have a different theory – that the holiday was strictly made for a day when people can express their love for one another. Campbell High School’s Student Council stuck with its annual tradition of selling carnations during lunch periods to students, staff, parents and community. White, pink and red carnations were sold, as were red roses. White carnations represent friendship, pink represents someone special and red symbolizes love. Carnations are usually sold for $1 every year, but this year, the Student Council wanted to mix it up a little bit. For $2, students had a chance to buy a carnation with a Dove chocolate and with a ribbon wrapped around it.

Feb. 1 was an interesting and exciting day for Milford High School students. Early that morning, the school was bombarded by students from Franklin Pierce University to get the kids up and moving, and thinking healthfully. Students were surprised by how much they didn’t know and enjoyed the fact that the Franklin Pierce group had a lot of new information to offer. “I was shocked by the large number of students who got involved,” senior Hannah Soucy said, “but it was easy to jump into each station because they were small, welcoming and educational.” The college students were eager to share their knowledge at Milford’s Health Fair. Several stations were set up in the gym and cafeteria, where students could learn about a variety of subjects.

Hollis Brookline High hosts Jazz Band Clinic

Jan. 26 was a normal day for most, but for many jazz students at Hollis Brookline High School and surrounding schools, it was a day filled with learning and fun. Hollis Brookline hosted a Jazz Band Clinic through the New Hampshire Band Directors Association, with HB band director Dave Umstead as the main organizer of the event. It included schools such as Milford, Souhegan, Timberlane in Plaistow and Pinkerton Academy in Derry, to name a few. To start the day, each school band was given the chance to play a few songs before professional musicians – the clinicians. All of the clinicians are professionals who are college professors, as well as active performers in New England: Jered Sims, Dave Seiler and John Mastroianni, saxophone; Jerry Sabatini, trumpet; Dave Bresnahan, trombone; John Funkhouser, piano and bass; Bryan Killough, guitar; Manuel Kaufmann, bass; and Les Harris Jr., drums. The clinicians would critique the songs and suggest ways to improve them. These improvements could include the dynamics, blending, style, balance or articulation. While one band was performing, the others watched and were able to see the clinician give advice to all of the schools.

All students aspire to reach a specific goal during their five days a week in high school. Some wish to score the winning goal in a sport, participate more in lecture or just to get to class on time. For the business students of Merrimack High School, their goal for the week of Feb. 11 involved a 100- question test, role playing and the chance to learn what it will be like to work in the business world. Then on Thursday, business students from all over the state competed at the DECA state conference. The Distributive Education Clubs of America is a nonprofit organization that helps prepare students in high school and college with hands-on experience of how to be successful in business careers such as accounting, marketing and hospitality. Students participate by choosing from more than 100 categories of interest. In that particular area of study, students must pass a 100-question test and role play a specific scene on detailed subject matter from their category. Points from the test and the role play are combined to create their score.

NASHUA – Nashua VFW Post 483 is preparing for its final four events before moving from its location at 2 Quincy St. The building recently was sold to the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter because the expenses to maintain it were costing the organization more than it was able to bring in on a monthly basis. A new location has not yet been found. The VFW is hoping for support from all veterans and their families in Greater Nashua, along with other residents, to help make these final events a huge success: The Ladies Auxiliary will host a Valentine’s Dinner Dance, postponed from Feb. 9, from 6-11 p.m. Saturday, Feb.

Nashua North InvenTeam working toward EurekaFest

As the second semester begins, many seniors at Nashua High School North have been tempted to settle into a routine of procrastination in their final months of high school. But for a group of six seniors, their continuing work developing a bacteria battery for the school’s Lemelson-MIT InvenTeam has kept them busy. North’s InvenTeam consists of Meghan Dezurick, Madeline Doctor, Theresa Inzerillo, Priyanka Satpute, Craig Hammond and Chris Jones. Each senior serves a unique role in the project, which started at the beginning of the school year when the group was awarded a coveted Lemelson-MIT grant for the funding of the battery’s development. The North InvenTeam was one of just a few across the country to win the grant. “We are hoping to create a product that will be able to provide cheap energy for rural and developing nations,” said Hammond, who has been developing the technical aspect of the battery. “The bacteria battery will be powered by a readily available fuel source. Right now, the technical role is working with different types of compost to see how effective each would be as a fuel source in the battery.” But the project’s technical side is only one component of its development. The InvenTeam’s communications side has been kept busy, as the project requires teams to submit monthly reports and videos to the Lemelson-MIT Initiative. The team has also been required to keep a blog, and runs its own Twitter and Instagram, allowing local partners to keep in touch with the team. “In my role as the financial lead, I have a financial goal to make for each month,” Inzerillo said.

Pets of the Week for Feb. 17

Henry If you’re looking for a lot of character in a small package, then I’m it! I’m a 3-year-old Chihuahua mix who is just adorable. I can be a little shy and unsure in new situations, so I’ll need an owner with patience and a home without young children. Once I get to know you, then you’ll see my cuddly, playful and extremely active sides. I like other dogs and would probably benefit from training class as a release for my energy and a chance to socialize with other people and dogs. If you’re experienced with Chihuahuas and prepared for a little guy with a big personality, then come meet me today – I know you won’t regret it! Please consider giving a sweet guy like me a chance, and don’t forget, all new adopters receive a free first veterinarian visit to your choice of 16 local vets. Patty & Jackie We’re petite 2-year-old sisters who came here when our family had to move. (That’s me, Jackie, on the right!) We were really nervous around the kids and the dog that chased us in our previous home, so we need a quiet home without any young children. If you take the time and patience to go slow with us, then you’ll be rewarded by what sweet and loving kitties we are.

Strictly Music revival at Souhegan High School

For the first time in years, Souhegan High School is hosting Strictly Music, a night giving local bands the spotlight and teenagers the freedom to dance and sing. Years ago, these special nights were headed by popular local acts such as the Sea Captains, the Jonee Earthquake Band, Shamherst, Flick Tracy and Undertow, but the last successful event was held in 2009. Now, in the new era of Strictly Music, Souhegan takes a fresh road: headlining bands are traveling all the way from Rhode Island to be a part of this special revival night. Kory Boutin, a Souhegan alumnus and now an experienced musician, participated in Strictly Music while at the school.“The last Strictly show I played was with a band called Shamherst my sophomore year,” Boutin said. “I’ve been playing music since I was about 4 years old. The first show I played was when I was 15, and since then I’ve played countless shows, as well as toured across the country.” Why would Boutin want to come back to a high school after all of his musical accomplishments? “I believe shows like Strictly Music are extremely important for high schools,” he said.
