Pets of the week

Joy Hey, it’s me, Joy! I’m a bouncy, excited girl who can’t wait to meet you! I’m a 4-year-old hound who came to the shelter all the way from Alabama to find my new home. Even though I can be a high-energy dog, I settle nicely and love nothing more than a good cuddle. I’m your typical hound who will follow my nose, and would really love to bond with my new family at a training class. I’m eager to learn, and this will be a good outlet for my energy, too. Because I get excited, I need a family with older children who can keep up with me.

Souhegan students reflect – 50,000 words later

A few Souhegan High School students spent November participating in National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo. Now, in January, the students reflect on the experience. To participate in NaNoWriMo, a person signs a pledge to attempt to write 50,000 words in the month. Juniors Gwen Jalbert-Landeck and Patience Roby are two of the Souhegan students, along with junior Olivia Edvalson, who participated. “It’s really hard,” Jalbert-Landeck and Roby said jointly, “and it takes up a lot of time. But if you do the full adult version, it feels like you’ve actually accomplished something.” The young adult version requires a pledge of 30,000 words, but Jalbert-Landeck and Roby said they felt that the support offered for the adult version was better. They “used the inspirational quotes that they posed online – ‘On Thanksgiving, hide in your bathroom with your laptop!’ ” they said. Other writers also offered support. “You got emails from other participants reinforcing you and telling you to keep going,” the girls said. Some writers will whine online; for example, someone will post, “My characters aren’t cooperating with me.” It can be funny, and they’ll also get ideas from other people. “People often ask for help developing details: ‘What happens if you get stabbed in the kidney?’ Participants will ask each other for ideas and help with developing ideas,” Jalbert-Landeck said. The sense of community is one of the most important parts of the NaNoWriMo writing process. “Deadlines really helped me stay on track,” Jalbert-Landeck said. Roby said she wrote on her calendar what her word count should be by a specific date.

Campbell’s halfway point means it’s exam week

The happy feeling of the school year reaching the halfway point has filled Campbell High School students, as the semester will end Friday, but it slowly goes away as the thoughts of midterms approach. Tuesday marks the start of midterm week this year, and students have been trying to get all of their studying done at the last moment. Midterms consist of everything learned in the semester, which counts 15 percent of the final grade in the class. Freshmen are worried, as most are new to the standardized testing at the high school level, while sophomores and juniors know the drill. Seniors, on the other hand, should be celebrating with a week off from school because of the amazing rule Campbell has had since it opened in 2000. If a senior has an “A” average in his or her class, then the senior is exempt from taking the final. The point of the rule is to encourage seniors to try their hardest as college approaches, and colleges are always looking for great midterm grades. Also, it gives the seniors a little reward for taking the challenging tests in their first three years. Senior Aly O’Donnell is excited about the week, as she has the full week off with no finals. On the other hand, I am out of luck with this great privilege, as I am in three Advanced Placement courses. Those classes make all students come in on exam days to take “practice AP tests”; it doesn’t matter if you  have an “A” in the class  or not. Freshmen, sophomores and juniors stress about the rule, saying it should be offered to all classes in the school. “If this opportunity was offered to all classes, then students at Campbell would perform better throughout the year because everyone hates studying and taking midterms,” junior Andrew Picard said. The midterms start on a perfect week this year, since Monday is Martin Luther King Jr.

Nashua South students get head start on education career

While most students at Nashua High School South have to sit in a classroom for a 90-minute block, some students spend a block in a different type of classroom. Nashua South is one of eight Career Technical Education schools in New Hampshire. The school has many CTE programs, such as health sciences and video production. One of the most unique CTE programs is Careers in Education. This  two-year program allows juniors and seniors to gain knowledge and real-life experience in child development.“The course is typically taken by students who are interested in pursuing careers working with children such as early childhood educator; elementary, middle or high school teachers; guidance counselor; speech language pathologist; or an occupational therapist,” said Judith Loftus, Careers in Education 2 teacher. During the first year of the program, students work at the preschool at South, Purple Panther Preschool. In the second year, students learn about elementary school-age kids.

Students embrace mystery of ‘BG Compliments’

In the current era of cyberbullying and teenage misuse of the Internet, a refreshing new Web personality has been created to brighten the social media of Bishop Guertin High School students. This “person” is “BG Compliments,” a new Facebook and Twitter account created by an anonymous BG student. The Facebook page was started in early December, and the Twitter page was born this month as a response to the wonderful success of the experiment on Facebook. As described by the cover photo of the Facebook page, the idea of a page dedicated to complimenting students was born at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and many high schools have adapted the friendly idea. The compliments are sent over Facebook messaging to “BG Compliments,” and they’re posted anonymously on the page. Everyone at BG loves the positivity and kindness that the page has inspired both on Facebook and in school. “People often use the cover of the Internet and its perceived anonymity to bully and spread hurtful, venomous messages,” history teacher Dr. Anthony Zavagnin said.

Nashua North sports Unified athletic teams

Nashua High School North recently founded its first Unified basketball team. The team, part of the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Special Olympics Sports Project, and open to male and female students, includes athletes with and without intellectual disabilities – “unifying” them as a single team. “The vision of the joint NHIAA/Special Olympics sports project,” according to the NHIAA, “is to allow students with and without intellectual disabilities the opportunity to represent their high school by participating on a Unified Sports team, providing the students with a quality experience of sports training and competition.” The NHIAA offers soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and volleyball and track in the spring, even providing the chance to compete for a state championship at the end of each regular season. Last spring, Nashua North hosted the city’s Unified Sports Day, busing in students from all schools in the district. Soccer, volleyball, track and basketball events were offered to anyone interested in competing. “Unified Sports Day seemed to work pretty well,” Nashua School District athletic director Thomas Aria said. “We wanted to use this event to kick off Unified sports within the schools. We are attempting to put it together and are moving in the right direction.” About half of Nashua North’s Unified basketball team is made up of “partners,” students with conventional class schedules and curriculums.

‘Alvirne Compliments’ promotes school pride

A social program that began at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, recently reached Alvirne High School through the creation of an “Alvirne Compliments” Facebook page. The original program has spread to at least 56 colleges and universities, including Brown, Stanford and Columbia, and now is making students at Alvirne feel better about themselves. The program is a Facebook page on which people can message the account with a compliment for an Alvirne student and it will be reviewed and published anonymously. The account is set up as the account of a person, not a page, so that individuals can be tagged in posts. The Facebook page was created on Dec. 17 and has remained active since then with increasing numbers of posts. The account is already friends with more than 600 students and is still growing. Senior Stephanie Martin thought the page was a good way “to promote Bronco pride and boost the attitude of the students.” It isn’t unusual to hear discussions about specific compliments throughout the day, and there is generally a certain amount of speculation over who sent which of the comments.

Thank you to St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua for father’s care

To the Editor: My 87-year-old father, Jerry Ross, was visiting from the West Coast for Christmas when he was taken ill. Twice, he was rushed to Saint Joseph Hospital, and both times, he was treated in an efficient and caring manner. He did not make it, and died of heart disease complicated by renal failure and pneumonia. This, however, was not because of any lack of effort on the part of the doctors and nurses at St. Joe’s. My heart is still full with gratitude and appreciation.
