Finality of being done sinks in at Merrimack High School

It’s Saturday, June 9. I’ve walked into Merrimack High School for the last time as a student. As I’m walking from the door to the school, I’m playing the past week back in my head and thinking, “How has this feeling not hit me until now?” The feeling I’m referring to is that I’m graduating from high school and moving on with my life. It somewhat scared me to think that I’ve known the people in this school for more than a decade and am just realizing that I may never see them again. But the week’s events played back in my head like a film reel. It starts with Monday, my last official day of school. It was senior sign-out day, when all of the seniors sign out of their classes. It wasn’t really a school day – more of a day of signing yearbooks, writing phone numbers and reminding everyone to stay in touch after graduation. Everyone is excited, teachers are saying goodbye and the day is moving faster than normal. I tell all of my favorite teachers that I am grateful for their help over the years, and then I walk into the gym to get the final signatures from my assistant principals.
