NASHUA â Local schoolchildren are invited to a ceremonial tree planting at the District 1 Schoolhouse in the Old South Burial Ground on Daniel Webster Highway at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 5.
The Arbor Day program will include the planting of an autumn blaze maple tree, poetry and songs performed by Nashua students directed by Pat Cauchon, an Arbor Day proclamation from the mayorâs office, and an open house of the Little Red Schoolhouse.
The Old South Burial Ground has lost many of its grand old trees to age and weather, and the planting of this tree will mark a new beginning for future foliage.
The tree was donated by the Benevolent Association of the Daughters of the King, who have restored and curated the schoolhouse and welcomed all local fourth-graders to a two-hour historical program since 1978.
âI have been a âschoolmarmâ at the District 1 Schoolhouse since 2005 and have seen the demise of many trees on the site,â said Susan Fineman, a member of the Daughters of the King.
