NASHUA – Over the span of eight weeks, Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentors in Training (MIT) students had the opportunity to be part of a special public speaking program designed to improve their communication and presentation skills through a partnership with a local Toastmasters chapter. MIT seventh- and eighth-grade students met with their Toastmaster coach, Don Winn, on Monday afternoons each week at the Boys and Girls Club, where they participated in the Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program. They learned a variety of skills, including overcoming being nervous when asked to speak in front of an audience, organizing their thoughts and ideas to present them clearly, listening carefully to others and leading group discussions and meetings. This specialized program reiterated how important leadership and public speaking skills are for students and young adults alike. The MIT students gained an increased confidence that will help them to stand up and be comfortable presenting their thoughts and ideas for years to come.
