Students poured out of their classrooms on Feb. 3, $1 bills in hand, as Milford High School made a difference as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer collaboration with the American Cancer Society.
The outpouring was motivated by an announcement over the loudspeaker that morning telling students that if they had ever known someone whoâd had cancer, to please donate a dollar. That dollar would buy a recognition card in memory of their loss or triumph against cancer.
In a matter of 15 minutes, everyone in the halls had their names on the cards as evidence of support.
The schoolwide effort followed the example of the Milford basketball team, which had been asked to raise $3 each for the same cause.
With the athletes and the support of the student body, the outcome was outstanding: The students raised more than $1,200.
Mark Maurais, the MHS athletics director, was in charge of the fundraising efforts and expressed his gratitude to the student body.
