A new program has recently been established at Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative High School that allows students to get credit for completing an ELO, or Extended Learning Opportunity.
David Finch, physical education teacher and ELO Committee chairman, was on a committee last year to âinvestigate the possibilities for students to get credit outside of the normal classroom scene,â he said.
The committee investigated how ELOs worked in other schools. They explored the pros and cons to establish what would be appropriate for students at WLC.
In the end, the committee wrote the ELO policy for the school, which was adopted in June by the School Board. The policy allows students to earn credit toward graduation by combining their in-school experience with learning outside school.
To become involved with an ELO opportunity, a student must start by filling out an application and then meeting with the ELO Committee for approval. The student needs to have a certified teacher in the school work with him or her, as well.
