I occasionally acquire a little piece of history from a former resident, papers or pictures found in a box or someoneâs attic, which I pass along to our Historical Society. A recent gift was a copy of a paper written by Lyndeborough resident Lucy Herrick on the occasion of the 100th anniversary celebration of Pinnacle Grange No. 18 in 1973.
The Patrons of Husbandry, known locally as âThe Grange,â once had a subordinate chapter in most of the area towns. According to the New Hampshire State Grange Web site, there are only four left in the area â Granite Grange in Milford, Joe English in New Boston, Brookline/Wilton in Brookline, and Watatic in New Ipswich.
The Grange was formed in Washington, D.C., in 1867 as a political block to combat the high costs of grain storage and rates charged by the railroads.
