Flashing lights, bright neon colors, wildly moving people, a strange glow about the place – is the world coming to an end? Nah, it’s just Nashua High School South’s junior-sponsored black light dance. Dances are one of the aspects of high school that are most looked forward to, often seen as fun events to dress up for, a place to impress classmates with your smooth dancing skills and a night to even meet a potential love interest. However, what makes a black light dance so different from the rest? The secret lies in the lighting. Black lights bathe normal-looking colors in unusual lights, making white look like bleached snow with an internal glow, and pink, yellow, green or orange look as though they were injected with highlighter fluid. Teeth also turn an eerie shade of white, and eyes look like those of a cat, portraying a feline and animalistic appearance. Overall, the effect is quite incredible and turns the dance into something mysterious and even more fun. The black light dance at South took place at 7 p.m. Friday, with tickets costing $12; it was a huge success. This dance has become a favorite tradition among the students, and raises money for the junior class to put toward future events, such as graduation or senior week. The profit made from this dance is still being counted, but it was sure to be a big one. Many students commented on how they felt the dance went, and why this theme is so different and special. “I think this dance was so exciting because most people haven’t been to a black light dance before and unlike homecoming, it’s not formal, and both juniors and seniors are invited,” junior Erin Slocum said.
