Ask a woman of a certain age who her perfect prom date would have been, and one of the names thatâs sure to come up is Johnny Castle, Patrick Swayzeâs character from the 1987 hit âDirty Dancing.â
The pictures in your high school yearbook may show you dancing the night away with an awkward young man in a ruffled tuxedo shirt, but you can snap that fantasy photo with Johnny as your prom date at Mom Prom Nashua 2013 at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 20, at the Alpine Grove Banquet Facility, 19 S. Depot Road, Hollis.
âWe have cardboard cutout men that you can pose with for prom pictures,â Prom Committee member Katie Long said.
One of these cutouts features Johnny from âDirty Dancing,â with his arms wrapped around Baby, Jennifer Greyâs character, in their trademark embrace. Babyâs head has been removed to allow promgoers to put their face in her place for the ultimate photo op.
Fabioâs cardboard counterpart also will be available to pose for pictures, as will a few others who are surprises, Long said.
Since the first Mom Prom Nashua in 2011, local women have donned their old prom dresses â the tackier, the better â for an annual evening of fun, frivolity and philanthropy.
The spark for Mom Prom was kindled in 2005, when Longâs sister, Betsy Crapps, of Canton, Mich., decided to wear one of her old prom dresses to her friendâs Oscar viewing party.
âAll the girls thought it was hysterical,â Long said.
Crapps and her friends decided they would all wear their old dresses and go out for dinner and dancing, an impromptu evening out that led to the creation of the first Mom Prom to raise money for charity in 2006.
Despite the title of the event, you donât have to be a mother to attend.
âThe original group of girls that did a lot of this was actually her momâs group through her church,â Long said; hence, the name.
Also, the name has a nice rhyming quality to it.
âGirls Prom doesnât have the same ring as Mom Prom,â Long said.
For the first year, proceeds from Mom Prom Nashua were donated to Susan G.
