One Millions Bones is a social and artistic project brought about to raise awareness of the genocide in Africa. The project focuses on Burma, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The purpose is to not only bring attention to these atrocious acts of murder, but also to raise money for the survivors who are constantly displaced by the genocide. It all began with Naomi Natale, an artist, photographer and social activist who formed the One Million Bones project in 2009. The goal was to have 1 million clay bones displayed at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., by 2013. The date is approaching quickly, with the bones to be spread across the Mall from June 8-10. The project brings awareness of the genocide to the public and also involves students and others through education. There are two ways to create a bone: papier-mache or clay.
