Service learning is a requirement to graduate for students at Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative High School. To earn the credit, students must volunteer unpaid time to a community or nonprofit organization. Students receive a credit for completing 24 hours. This requirement is a benefit to not only the school and the community, but also the students. It helps them get involved with their school’s activities and around their community. The service learning coordinators English teacher Dolores Neilan and social studies teacher Michael Dring. “I think it’s a good thing to have it be required,” senior Katie Day said. “It gets people involved who normally wouldn’t be.” Some students don’t think it should be a requirement, however. “I think that if a student feels he should do community service, he should take it upon himself to do so,” senior Ethan Ferriauolo said. When service learning was initiated more than 10 years ago, students would have to complete 24 hours by the end of their senior year to graduate.
