I recently encountered my first woolly bear caterpillar of the season, and it was almost all orange. According to folklore, that means we will have a mild winter.
In checking with other people who have seen them, the caterpillars have all been different.
I have found over the years that is the usual case and have decided that they canât make up their minds. After all, weather forecasters with all kinds of sophisticated equipment sometimes get it totally wrong. You simply canât trust the weather.
Folklore says it is the width of the black bands that determines the weather.
